Sent on behalf of Dr. Anirban Basu, Professor & Stergachis Family Endowed Director of the CHOICE Institute and Dr. Josh Carlson, Graduate Program Director, and Admissions Committee Chair

Dear Colleagues,

The CHOICE (Comparative Health Outcomes, Policy and Economics) Institute at the University of Washington (uwchoice.org) is actively recruiting qualified applicants for admission to the PhD Program in Health Economics & Outcomes Research (HEOR) for the Fall 2023 cohort. Further details about the program can be found at uwchoice.org/graduate-education-training-programs/phd-program/

Our PhD program prepares students to become independent scientists and leaders in health economics, outcomes research and policy evaluation, with special emphasis on the pharmaceutical sector. Upon graduation, about one-third of our CHOICE alumni find placement in academia, another one-third are in industry or healthcare consulting and the remaining one-third are in governmental or non-profit organizations. Students complete courses in the fields of biostatistics, epidemiology, health economics, decision sciences, clinical trial design and analysis, and health policy in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the complex and interdisciplinary environment of health economics and outcomes research. Didactic preparation is augmented with substantive involvement in the research and teaching programs of our world-renowned graduate faculty with expertise in health economics, outcomes research, health policy evaluation, genomics, pharmacoepidemiology, translational research, and therapeutics.

In addition, the collaborative opportunities at the UW and greater Seattle area are unparalleled and include relationships with the Departments of Health Systems and Population Health, Global Health, Surgical Outcomes Research Center, [uwsurgery.org] Program for Health Economics and Outcomes Methodology, and the Institute of Translational Health Sciences [iths.org] at the UW, and also Seattle Children’s Hospital [seattlechildrens.org], Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute [kpwashingtonresearch.org], the Institute for Disease Modeling [idmod.org], the Health Services Research & Development Center of Excellence at the VA [hsrd.research.va.gov], the Gates Foundation [gatesfoundation.org], PATH [path.org], and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center [fredhutch.org], all located within ten miles of each other in beautiful Seattle.

We offer two years of guaranteed stipend support to all admitted students and it is extremely rare that a student is not fully funded during their entire time in the program. This is due, in large part, to the many funded opportunities to participate in research supported by government agencies like the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, as well as non-profit organizations and industry funders.

The application deadline is December 15, 2022 and applications are submitted through the UW Graduate School. Additionally, we are hosting an online information session on Wednesday, October 19 at 9:00 AM PDT for prospective students. Registration is required and can be completed here [washington.zoom.us]. The session will feature an overview of the program and Q&A session with our faculty. It will be recorded and posted to our website for those unable to attend.

If you know of talented students who are interested in doctoral training in health economics and outcomes research, we would greatly appreciate if you could let them know about our program at University of Washington.

Best regards,
